MEET THE DESIGNER: ATLAS x RIVER ISLAND

For our latest Behind the Design collaboration, we sat down with Adrianne Dimitrakakis, the artist behind the Atlas x River Island limited-edition collection. Inspired by Adrianne’s travels, each piece is designed to bring colour, character, and a sense of escape to your wardrobe. We spoke to Adrianne about her creative process, the stories behind her artwork, and how this vibrant collection came to life.

Tell us a bit about your journey with art.

Art has always been a constant in my life. I was that kid drawing on walls and living in the art room at school. During my university days, I’d always find ways to bring art, illustration, or texture into my work...I just loved it. Even when I was working as a graphic designer, I gravitated towards hands-on projects. I liked stepping away from the screen and getting a bit messy. Now, art is my livelihood, which still feels wild to me. But I still get excited by new ideas and the chance to create something fresh.

Travel is a big inspiration in your work. Can you describe your most memorable trip or place, and the pieces that were created?

That’s a tough one! There are a few special places or moments that have stayed with me. Recently, I created a show based on the Pacific. One of my favourite pieces came from a trip to the Tahiti Atolls. It was one of those places that leaves a deep imprint. Endless palms, unbelievably clear blue water, wooden huts - it just didn’t feel real. What made it even more special was the feeling of the place and the people. That combination is what made it magic.

As an artist, what made you want to collaborate with River Island?

I loved the idea of seeing how my artwork would translate onto clothing and fabric – how it would transform into something wearable.

Can you describe the creative process behind making these pieces?

It usually starts with an idea and a quick, loose sketch, just enough to get the key elements down. From there, I experiment with colour palettes, words, fonts, and shapes. It can go in any direction, which is what I love about it. If something starts to feel predictable, I push it further, try to take it somewhere unexpected. Once the concept feels right, I start texturing the canvas and layering in colour. That’s when things start to fall into place. Sometimes I’ll sit with a painting for months, unsure of what’s missing - then suddenly, a small idea strikes, and it completes the piece.

Your work aims to provide people with true keepsakes from their travels. What do you hope customers gain from this collection?

I hope the work creates that almost memory-like feeling real nostalgia, even for places you haven’t visited. I want it to make people smile or feel happy. I feel happy when I’m making it. I try to keep things playful, and I hope that energy comes through - like you're seeing a place, but through my lens.
